Expecting Moms?

Expecting your newborn is such an exciting time but it can also produce anxiety and body changes. Postural changes and altered body mechanics can result in some ailments. Most of these conditions can be well treated with physical therapy exercises.

In many countries, it is standard of care to receive pre-natal and post-partum Physical Therapy to address and deal with changes women go through before and after birth. However, in USA women don’t consider Physical therapy as part of their expected care along with their gynecological visits. We do believe that medical practitioners can work together to help you alleviate pain, discomfort and make you feel better during your pregnancy.

What are the benefits of Pre-natal exercises

A very common condition experienced with pregnancy is low back pain and you can find relief with Physical Therapy. There are postural changes happening in your body at different stages of pregnancy with gentle abdominal and chest expansion, which shifts your center of gravity.

There is increased swaying in your back, which can result in not only low back pain but also cause pain your shoulders, neck, head and legs as well. Having a pre-existing condition makes the pregnancy related pain worse i.e. herniated disc, carpal tunnel syndrome, joint pains. Thus during pregnancy, you can experience leg swelling which can make your standing, walking, stair climbing worse and can sometimes result in pain while sleeping or sitting. Specific exercises can help stimulate lymphatic drainage to reduce swelling and also promote good circulation throughout your body. There is also increased demand on your body, which can make you feel more tired and drained.
General strengthening of all muscle groups helps you build endurance. Exercising can also help reduce inflammation in the joints which can prevent cartilage injury. Pelvic floor exercises which involves stretching and strengthening can aide in delivery and also prevent incontinence post-partum. Proper abdominal exercises can also prevent diastasis recti (separation of abdominal muscles)
